Getting started with PlanHitch

Create an account, choose "We're getting married", then add both your names and your wedding date. Everything else in setup is optional. Add your partner's email during setup, or later from Settings, then Collaborators, and they join the same wedding as an Owner, even if they don't have an account yet.

How to do it

  1. 1

    Create your account

On the sign-up page, under "Who is this for?", choose "We're getting married". If you'd like a filled-in example to look round first, tick "Also add a sample wedding to look around".

  2. 2

Add the two of you and the date

The first step is called "Let's start with the two of you". Add your first and last name, your partner's first and last name, and the wedding date. The reply-by date is optional and you can set it later. Check "Your RSVP link", the address guests use to reply, then choose "Continue". Your wedding is saved at this point.

  3. 3

Get a first answer, or skip it

Under "Get a first answer now" you can choose "Describe your wedding" (a sentence is enough and PlanHitch turns it into your plan), "Check a quote" (see if one supplier's price is fair for your area) or "Check a contract". Choose "Skip for now" to move on. All three are on your dashboard later.

  4. 4

Answer the style questions, or skip them

"What does your day feel like?" asks five quick questions about your style, colours, venue, flowers and atmosphere, so suggestions fit your wedding. Choose "Skip this step" if you'd rather not.

  5. 5

    Add your partner's email

Under "Plan it together", enter your partner's email and choose "Save". Nothing is sent yet. The invitation is emailed when you finish setting up, and your partner joins the wedding as an Owner, with the same access as you.

  6. 6

    Open your planner

The last step lists where most couples begin. Choose "Open my planner" to go to your wedding's Home page. To skip the optional steps at any point, choose "Quick finish" at the top of the page. It only needs both your names and the wedding date.

What's on your Home page

Home is the first item in the sidebar. At the top you'll see both your names, the wedding date and four headline numbers: Guests, Attending, Invitations sent and your budget. Underneath, "How ready you are" shows your overall progress as a percentage.

While you're new, "Three things to start with" suggests adding your guests, finding your venue and setting your budget. Further down you'll find counts for Suppliers, Venues, Tables and Pending RSVP, a "Worth doing next" list, a "First things" checklist, "Recent activity", "Quick links" to the main pages and the first items from your wedding day timeline.

The rest of the app is grouped in the sidebar: Your planner, Guests, Suppliers, Budget, The day, Website and Keepsakes, with Settings at the foot. Sections with more than one page show tabs across the top, for example Guests, then Guest list, Table plan, Invitations and Messages.

How your partner joins

If your partner already has a PlanHitch account with a confirmed email, they're added to the wedding straight away and can open it.

If they don't have an account yet, or haven't confirmed their email, they're sent an email to make one, free. They join your wedding as soon as they've confirmed their email address. Until then, PlanHitch asks them to confirm it, rather than starting them on setting up a wedding of their own.

They join as an Owner: full access to everything, including the budget, settings and collaborators. It's their wedding too.

Inviting others to plan with you

Go to Settings, then Collaborators, and choose "Invite". Enter their email address, pick a role and choose "Send invite". They don't need an account first.

If they already have an account with a confirmed email, they're added at once. If not, they get an email to make an account and join once they've confirmed their email. Until then they're listed under "Waiting to join", where you can choose "Cancel invite".

There are five roles. Owner: full access to everything, including settings and collaborators. Choose this for your partner. Couple: can view everything, but can only edit the music and timeline. Editor: can view and edit guests, vendors, venues, invitations, music, tables and timeline, but not the budget or settings. Viewer: read-only access to guests, vendors, venues, invitations, music, tables, budget and timeline. Vendor: can only view vendors and venues.

When it's just you on the wedding, the invite starts on Owner. After that it starts on Editor. Only an Owner can make someone an Owner, or change or remove an Owner.

You can change anyone's role, or remove them, from the list on the Collaborators page. Removing someone takes away their access at once, and you can undo it straight after.

How many people can open a wedding depends on its plan, and the count includes you. Free allows 2 people, Premium allows 5 people and Unlimited has no limit. Invites still waiting to join count towards the limit. When you reach it, PlanHitch asks you to upgrade before you can invite anyone else.

The sample wedding

If you ticked "Also add a sample wedding to look around" when you signed up, a filled-in example wedding sits beside your own. Switch to it from the wedding switcher in the sidebar, where you can also choose "Create a new wedding".

The sample wedding is set up on the Unlimited plan, so you can see paid features in action there. To remove it, open the sample wedding, go to Settings and choose "Remove sample wedding" under "Sample data". Your own weddings aren't affected.

The Free plan in brief

You can plan a whole wedding on the Free plan, with no time limit. It includes an unlimited guest list with online RSVPs, a wedding website, guest list import from a spreadsheet, the invitation editor, the venue pack and one contract review per wedding.

Some things are capped on Free: 5 tables, 20 budget lines, 5 vendors, 3 venues and 2 people on the wedding. The AI planner (Your planner in the sidebar) and AI Seat on the table plan come with Premium and Unlimited. See "Plans and billing" for the full comparison.

Guided tours, and how to replay them

The first time you reach Home, a short welcome tour walks you round your overview and how the app is laid out. After that, the first time you open a page that has its own tour, you're offered it in a small prompt: choose "Show me" to take it or "Not now" to skip it.

To replay a tour, select the ? in the top bar. It starts the tour for the page you're on, or the welcome tour if that page doesn't have one. You can also go to Settings and choose "Take the tour" next to "Guided tour" to replay the welcome tour.

Questions

Can I change our names or the wedding date after setup?

Yes. Once the first setup step is saved, names and the date are changed in Settings rather than in the setup steps.

My partner doesn't have a PlanHitch account. Can I still invite them?

Yes. Add their email during setup, or invite them from Settings, then Collaborators. They're emailed an invitation to make an account, and join your wedding once they've confirmed their email.

I invited my partner but they can't see our wedding. Why?

They need to confirm their email address first. Ask them to follow the link in the confirmation email, then sign in again. Until they do, they're listed under "Waiting to join" on the Collaborators page.

What can my partner do?

A partner invited during setup is an Owner, so they can do everything you can, including the budget, settings and inviting others.

How many people can we add to our wedding on the Free plan?

Up to 2 people, including you, and invites still waiting to join count. Premium allows 5 people and Unlimited has no limit.

How do I get rid of the sample wedding?

Open the sample wedding, go to Settings and choose "Remove sample wedding". Your own wedding stays as it is.

I closed the welcome tour by mistake. How do I see it again?

Select the ? in the top bar, or go to Settings and choose "Take the tour".
